It’s hard to believe but David Beckham turned 40 on Saturday. To celebrate, he joined Instagram and gained two million followers, enjoyed a dinner party with his family and went on to party with some ‘retiring ladies’ of showbiz.

‘he hasn’t put on a pound…
that’s down to his fondness
for spinning classes’

In the nineteen years since he scored that outrageous goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon, he has played for the best club in Europe (and Real Madrid), become England’s most capped outfield player, captained his country 58 times, received an OBE, done a spot of modelling and done more for the tattoo industry than anyone else in history. In 2013, he was highest paid player in the world, earning over $50 million in the previous 12 months.

Unlike most ex footballers, since retiring from the game a couple of years ago, he hasn’t become a football pundit or gone into management or appeared on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Instead, he has made a seamless transition from football superstar to cultural icon.

Manchester’s favourite cockney has been happily married for 15 years and got four lovely kids. To make matters worse, he’s still dead good-looking and looks like he hasn’t put on a pound on since that goal against Wimbledon. Apparently, that’s down to his fondness for spinning classes – the high-intensity exercise which involves peddling as hard as you can on a stationary bike whilst adding and subtracting resistance.

It’s enough to make you sick but it doesn’t because he comes across as being a lovely, down to earth bloke.

So a belated happy birthday, Becks and thanks for the memories xxx

PS By the way, David, next time you’re in Manchester, Europe’s largest spinning facility is opening in Spinningfields (exactly!) on May 18th. And if you’re one of the first 500 spinners to register on the Spin Factory website, www.spinfactory.co.uk you will qualify for the special opening offer of half price credits, when purchased before 18th May.
